Looking Back on Frankie Dettori’s Career
Every sport has competitors that transcend the borders of the sport itself. Non-golfers know Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, non-footballers know Messi and Maradona, and even those not in the know about racing know the name Frankie Dettori. As part of racing royalty, Dettori’s fame in the racing circuit marks him as one of the biggest in the field, with an enduring legacy we expect will last long into the future. Among recent jockeys, he ranks with Lester Piggott and AP McCoy in the public consciousness.
With Dettori announcing his retirement in February of 2026 (again), we thought it would be a perfect time to look back on his career and explore just how strong an influence he’s had in racing. From career wins to restauranteering, it’s an interesting tale on and off the track
Born to ride
Dettori is a second-generation jockeying talent, following in the footsteps of his father, Gianfranco Dettori. Gianfranco was already an established pro at the time of Frankie’s birth in 1970, and eventually became a 13-time Italian Champion Jockey. While Frankie initially showed more interest in football, this would change after he received his first pony at age eight. He would go on to compete the very next year, with an inauspicious last place signalling that he had a long way to go.
Not one to be deterred, Frankie stuck with it. He left school at age 13, working in racing stables and in the racing world to further his knowledge and skill base. During this time, he moved to England at the yard of famed trainer Luca Cumani, with an effort which apparently paid off. He eventually returned home, earning his first victory in 1986.
Racing success
When covering Dettori’s long career, it’s almost easier to note the few races he didn’t win, so robust is his winning record. With over 14,000 starts, Dettori claimed over 2,600 wins and 3,700 places. His long legacy and winning record put him up there with the greats like Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery, and Yutaka Take.
Top-level wins cover some of the most competitive and prestigious races in the world, including: • Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – three wins • Irish Derby – six wins • King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – five wins
While there is no one objective measure of overall best of the best, if such a discussion is to be had, Dettori finds himself among the frontrunners.
Outside ventures
With such a famous name, it’s only natural that Dettori would connect his brand to greater business ventures. These have included work in TV shows such as This Is Your Life, Celebrity Big Brother, and A Question of Sport.
Dettori also lent his name to several large and small-scale projects in the food and entertainment space. Famous examples can be found in UK online casino websites, with titles like Frankie Dettori: Sporting Legend and Frankie Dettori’s Jackpot Roulette. Dettori also found success in the food sector, with a chain of Frankie’s Bar and Grill opening up in partnership with Marco Pierre White in Italy.
But like a lot of sportsmen, he sadly became involved with people who placed a lower value on his reputation than him. His recent bankruptcy hearing doesn't make the racing crowd love him any less (unless they register in his list of creditors), but it illustrates a man who was always happier among horses than managing his wealth.
Frankie Dettori may have reached the end of his racing career, but we don’t expect we’ve seen the end of his fame in the sporting sphere any time soon. With the potential to pivot into a professional commentator or sports personality, his rare level of insight and success could produce huge benefits for the audience and even guide a new generation of riders to success in the decades to come.
